Overview
Even with the best intentions, business leaders find it difficult to make measurable behavior changes to create effective long-term growth. In this book, award-winning executive coach Yan Maschke declares that the most effective leaders use more than just the Mind to reach their full potential. They embrace Embodied Leadership, a leadership approach that actively integrates the holistic intelligence of the Body and Mind to increase leadership effectiveness, impact, and fulfillment.

Drawing on 25 years of experience as a corporate executive, management consultant, executive coach, and strategic advisor, Maschke uses her cross-cultural life experience to bring an integrative Mind-Body approach that delivers proven results. By working with the Body and Mind in cultivating their BEING (“inner game”), leaders can deepen self-awareness. By working with the Body and Mind in cultivating their DOING (“outer game”), leaders can accelerate real change.

Whatever your role, this book aims to unlock your full business potential and create a better way to lead.

  • Being authentic is being aligned in what we think, feel, speak, and do.

  • Note: I am envisioning the design in a way that “think”, “feel”, “speak”, “and do” are each on its own line/row

  • Everyone is a leader. Leadership starts with self.

  • Leadership is most inspiring when we are authentic.

  • Leadership and life should be holistic: Being + Doing; Mind + Body.

  • Being is who we choose to be.

  • Doing is what we choose to do.

After working super hard to achieve her goal and dream job, Yan discovered that her life formula did not work!

being and doing diagram 1.png

Power of Your Body

o Leadership and life requires Being (who we choose to be) + Doing (what we choose to do)

o By integrating the Mind and Body, we deepen awareness and accelerate action.

Conceptual awareness is not equal to embodied awareness.jpg

Embodied awareness is visceral and real; it deepens our commitment to action.

Awareness is only half the battle.

The issue is in the tissue

Mind + Body

Desired Actions == Embodied Actions

We often hear people being described as “being in the zone,” “on top of their game,” “on fire.”   Yan brings unique insight into how to find the level of focus and self-awareness necessary to experience more of these moments through embodied awareness.  This was a new term for me, and I now think about it as being fully present and unburdened by historical baggage.  Unburdened by preprogrammed thoughts, she goes on to demonstrate how we can up our game and become more effective leaders.

If you are trying to be a better leader or a better person, this book is for you!

Craig Arnold, Chairman and CEO, Eaton Corporation

In her true colors, Yan Maschke embodies integration of the East and the West. Her integrative approach to leadership is refreshing and impactful. A must-read for any leader!

Great leadership is critical to any business or organization. But how can leaders become great?  Yan Maschke’s answer is to look at the art of leadership holistically, crystallizing her deep executive coaching experience to enable anyone in any position to achieve balance, overcome obstacles, and excel.

Her real-life examples are engaging and provide many practical lessons drawn from the fusion of her Eastern and Western experiences.

Stewart Kohl, Co-CEO, The Riverside Company

Leadership development requires an in-depth analysis of the whole person, which includes understanding how they think, lead, problem solve, interact with others, and take care of themselves (mentally and emotionally).

Yan Maschke covers each of these areas masterfully and ties them all together through a compelling Mind-Body framework.  Her "Being" versus "Doing" dichotomy is brilliant and a critical determinant of success for any leader.

Stop being a body denier. Embrace yourself (however weird that sounds). Awareness and action is Yan’s recipe for holistic authenticity and the path to a deep sense of purpose in life. In the process, you find that you become more exciting to others and maybe unleash your inner leader!

I loved the book. The adage ‘Train people and fear they leave or not train people and fear they stay’ is even more true with coaching. Yan has made an enormous impact on our business so take her book to heart and see your business improve.

Embodied Leadership is the new emotional intelligence. Sustained great leadership requires wholeness and authenticity. Yan’s holistic approach connects the mind + body to drive lasting impact.

The methods shared in her book are both practical and impactful. Leaders looking to reach their full potential should read this book!

Steve Kessen, CEO, Fathom

My conversations with Yan are always enlightening. The way she leads her clients to the essence of leadership is unique. Her integrated methodology, combining Being and Doing, is spot on, one can’t lead to sustainable change and success without the other.

She is a thought leader in the field of new world executive coaching, where actual change is achieved.

Yan is not only a student of leadership, but she is also a proven executive that has led at the highest levels.  Yan provides incredible wisdom and practical tools that I have already put into action.

The book is a powerful tool for those looking to take their business and leadership to the next level.

Sean Wenger, CEO, Precision Communications

I initially did not understand or comprehend the need and fundamentals of an executive coach.  I recall an early conversation regarding a project for an expat we have in China and naïvely said, he needs training! Yan politely helped me appreciate the difference between training and coaching, and we began a very rewarding relationship.

Yan creates a balance between coaching, mentoring, informing, and challenging that helps the individual and team create the right relationship with all relevant stakeholders. People say change is hard.  It is, but it is much more achievable when you have Yan as your coach to guide you through the process.

Leadership development starts with self-awareness and self-development. To lead others, one must first lead self. While this is a standard for good leadership, Yan Maschke uniquely presents how to achieve this concept for game-changing leadership and personal fulfillment.

Her identification of the sense of Being and Doing is an exciting paradigm for the successful journey that every leader should explore. The material in this book is powerful and practical, and vital information for leaders across many fields.

Serpil Erzurum, M.D., Chair, Lerner Research Institute, Cleveland Clinic

Leadership starts with self and Yan sets the example for others from day one. She encourages from the front, leads from the middle leaving no one behind. She is a highly effective leadership coach and advisor for individuals and for leadership teams.

This book does a fabulous job capturing her unique integrative approach to leadership, which helps leaders deepen self-awareness and accelerate desired change towards their vision.

Great and easy read... emotionally captivating and spiritually rewarding. Everyone should read it and learn. As we say in Ghana, “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second-best time is NOW."

Siisi Adu-Gyamfi, Managing Director, AGA Associates; Author; Interim CEO, ID-Queue LLC

This is a book for leaders who want to understand the depth of their capabilities and harness the power that is created by bringing Mind and Body together.  I’ve spent so many years trying to get smarter, but Yan’s work shows just how much more effective I can be by connecting the emotional and the physical to my efforts.

Absolutely recommend to senior leaders and to young executives looking for their edge.  I wish this book existed earlier in my career.

As a new executive, I was inspired and motivated by this book to look deep within and acknowledge my subconscious as I make decisions. Yan’s insight in excellence being a habit resonated with me as I strive to create a culture of excellence and not perfection in our organization.

This book is an essential read for a new executive and offers a fresh perspective on self-awareness and strategic thinking.
