Caring Selectively

At this time of year, we often reflect on our accomplishments, lessons learned, gratitudes, and what’s next.

But this December, instead of looking back on the year, I find myself looking back across the years.

The question that keeps rising is: “What is the biggest change inside of me over time?

It’s clearly a Being question, not a Doing question.

What I hear in myself is this: I don't care less, but I care about far fewer things.

Compared to my younger self, I care about the opinions of far fewer people. I am far more focused with my passion and far more selective with my efforts. I feel much more grounded in why I do what I do - and how I choose to show up.

I’m much more discerning about how I spend my time and who I spend it with.

And I savor daily experience with far more presence — not as a concept, but with embodied intention and awareness.

A small moment recently brought this into focus.

I took my daughter to the Cleveland Museum of Art to see a wonderful special exhibit (it’s such a joy to have her home from college for the holiday break). Afterward, we shared afternoon tea at the museum café.

The world seemed to slow down. Time gently stretched. I found myself soaking in the moment with all my senses — fully present. It felt much more satisfying than networking with 50 people (which I thrived on for much of my adult life).

I have changed. I have become more grounded, focused, and grateful as a person.

Invitation for Reflection

1. What is the biggest change inside of you over the years?

  • Note 1: This isn’t about Doing — what you’ve achieved or not. It’s about Being — how you show up to yourself, others, and the world.

  • Note 2: Be gentle with yourself.

2. How does that change make you feel?

3. How might it inform or inspire what comes next?

Wishing you a warm and heart-opening holiday season!
